Who Are We?
Mission Unity is a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization that operates residential facilities for single adults who have become homeless as a result of substance abuse and addiction.
What Do We Provide?
A safe, stable, sober, supportive group setting for persons who express a commitment to complete abstinence from substance abuse and recovery from addiction. Mission Unity does not attempt to directly provide professional substance abuse counseling.
Why Does It Work?
An abuse free family group home provides the stability needed for an addict to begin rebuilding their life. When the basic human needs for food, shelter, and companionship are provided, then the afflicted can focus on the spiritual and emotional aspects of recovery.
How Did It Start?
Mission Unity was incorporated as a Florida not-for-profit corporation in May of 2002. Since that time it has successfully operated a residential facility in Port Charlotte, Florida, facilitating a significant number of persons back into substance free independent living. The program was begun with a small amount of seed money from concerned and committed community citizens and nominal contributions from residents to cover the cost of food, utilities and housing maintenance. Mission Unity has been gratified by the support of the United Way of Charlotte County, The Charlotte County Homeless Coalition, related Departments of the Charlotte County Government, the Florida Department of Children and Families and numerous area churches and private individuals.
On April, 2004, Mission Unity was granted 501(c)3 status by the Internal Revenue Service as a tax exempt organization, whereby grantors and contributors may deduct contributions to our organization. In May of 2004, with the assistance of a grant from the Florida Department of Children and Families, Mission Unity completed construction and dedication of a new 16 bed facility in nearby Murdock, Florida to serve more of those in need. A third house is now operational to enable us to better serve the currently underserved female population in our area.
About Our Founder
The program was founded and is directed by James O. Byrom, a Certified Associate Addictions Professional. Mr. Byrom is a former United States Marine and a former addict with thirteen years of sobriety and more than 2000 hours of experience in substance abuse counseling. He has dedicated his life to helping people through the recovery process. His past experience with his own addiction provides both a common bond with residents, and in the face of hopelessness, serves to say that recovery is indeed possible.
How Are We Supported?
Support is provided in part by the residents of Mission Unity, by community organizations, and by part county and state organizations. This support, however, does not cover the total costs of our operation and the charitable services that must be provided to meet the needs of those who have committed to their recovery from addiction.
